Intrepid Class
History
Development of the Intrepid class began in the late 2360s, with the first entering service in 2370. Designed to address the need for more numerous and flexible starships within Starfleet, and answer to the growing need for a versatile and quick class of starships which were capable of excellent maneuvering at both impulse and warp speed, its multi-role capabilities allow it to perform various missions, from exploration to combat. However, it was specifically built for long-term exploration missions, and was at the time, one of the fastest classes in Starfleet. At the time of its introduction, the Intrepid-class was considered to be the most technologically advanced out of all Starfleet's starship classes, featuring many innovations that were then newly available, including the warp core's tricyclic input manifold and variable geometry warp nacelles, allowing greater control of their warp field. These advances, along with the streamlined hull design, also made Intrepid class ships candidates for refit with QSD. The class was also the first to use bio-neural gel packs and had the Mark I Emergency Medical Hologram (or EMH) system.
One of the few Starfleet starship classes capable of atmospheric entry and planetary landing, due to antigravity generators as well as impulse and lifters strategically placed on the bottom portion of the secondary hull. Prior to and during landing or takeoff procedures, the vessel typically went to blue alert, indicating to the crew they were to assume their code-blue stations.
The second ship commissioned, USS Voyager, was the first ship to test the class 9 warp drive in deep space. That ship was notable for independently, and successfully, completing an unscheduled seven-year journey across the previously unexplored Delta Quadrant, seventy thousand light years from Federation space, from 2371 to 2378, with no access to any Starfleet supplies or facilities for the entire length of its journey. As a result of the Voyager journey, this class was considered highly successful and kept in service with continued retrofits maintaining the Intrepid class as state-of-the-art spacecraft beyond the turn of the 24th century.
