About Humans
Humans (Homo sapiens), also known as human beings, are a warp-capable humanoid species from the planet Earth. As an ancient term for Earth was Terra, humans are sometimes also referred to as 'Terrans', and the adjective 'Terran' to refer to subjects or institutions associated with Humanity (Terran cuisine, Terran literature, Terran art, etc.). As humans are one of the most populous and wide-ranging species in the galaxy (they have been jokingly referred to as the 'cockroaches of the galaxy'), the term 'Terran' may also be used to distinguish Humans living on Earth from those residing off-world.
Though not as strong, fast, intelligent or long-lived as many competing space-faring species, humans have proven to be incredibly adaptable and resilient, finding ways to their colonize or join societies on a vast array of worlds, despite strongly rejection of the use of any genetic modifications. As a result of this adaption and dispersal to many different worlds, human culture is incredibly diverse. Moreover, owing to the Progenitors that seeded humans as well as many other species across space, Humans are compatible with most other humanoid species across the galaxy, and their tendency to 'adopt' other species in their communities (something noted even prior to extraterrestrial contact) means that they readily settle among others and frequently adopt aspects of their cultures. Hence, human culture is always changing and evolving, both at local and galactic levels.
This is not to say that there are not tendencies toward xenophobia - human culture varies immensely and includes various (and often contradictory) strains of xenophobia, including even bias against other groups of humans - but from the early 22nd century on humans were easily the most outworldly, idealistic, and expansionistic race in the United Federation of Planets, and possessed those qualities in a greater degree than many of the races they encountered. This and a strong tradition of innovation and cooperation, made them leaders in the founding of Federation. Another consequence of these tendencies is that Humans tend to make up a large proportion of Starfleet.
