Romulan and Klingon Disruptors
Type Description
5 The Klingon Type 5 disruptor cannon was, as with the shielding carried by most Klingon shuttles, designed for a Bird of Prey variant over 100 years ago. With advances in technology, the miniaturization of this device has enabled it to be mounted on the Empire's shuttles and runabouts, providing a punch equivalent to that of a Type VI phaser.
8 The Type 8 disruptor was originally designed to be mounted on the B'rel Class Bird of Prey variant and since then has proven itself an invaluable weapon. Arguably, the provision of the cannon to that vessel has caused its success, primarily because of the high rate of fire and the comparatively high firepower of the disruptor. The disruptor's rate of fire is similar to that of the Type U pulse phaser and has a power level comparable to that of the Type IX phaser array.
9 The Type 9 disruptor cannon is one of the most advanced types of disruptor cannon currently in service with the Klingon Defense Force. Currently the mainstay of Klingon combat vessels, it packs a major punch comparable with that of a Federation Type X phaser or a Cardassian System 5 phase disruptor. The disruptor is unusual in that it trades firepower for rate of fire, meaning that it fires relatively slowly compared with other Klingon weapons. To counter this deficiency, it is often allied with the Type 8 disruptor.
10 The largest known disruptor employed on Romulan starships, the T Type, named for T’Kol, the Star Empire’s foremost weapons expert, is believed to be at least equal in sheer strength to the sizable cannon of the Klingons’ Negh’var Class warships. Like most Romulan weaponry, however, it has displayed greater range and accuracy than its Alpha and Beta Quadrant counterparts, making it the most lethal single-shot directed energy weapon currently in service. However, the necessary machinery is believed to be almost disadvantageously cumbersome, meaning that, as yet, only the D’Deridex Class warbird is large enough to carry even one of these weapons. Like most Romulan disruptor cannon (as opposed to emitters), it is capable of firing pulses or beams.
