Development on the Defiant began around 2366 in response to the Borg threat to the Federation. After initial and hostile first contact with the Borg and the devastating defeat in the Battle of Wolf 359, resulting in the loss of nearly 40 ships and 11,000 personnel to a single Borg vessel, proved that the Federation's defenses were horribly inadequate, and plans were spearheaded for the production of a more combat capable starship. As a result, Starfleet did what it hadn't done in decades and drafted plans for a starship designed primarily for defense. Officially classified as an escort vessel, the Defiant was nothing less than Starfleet's first design of a warship intended to combat the Borg. The vessel featured minimal equipment for scientific research and was not designed to accommodate families, science labs, or luxuries of any kind.
Initial tests, however, showed it to be over-powered and over-gunned, resulting in the ship nearly shaking itself apart at full power. Due to these flaws, and the Borg threat becoming less urgent, it was mothballed until the emerging threat from the Dominion. The first vessel was officially launched in 2370 from the Antares shipyards and after several upgrades at DS9 as deemed worthy of use leading to more ships of the class being constructed. The Defiant-class was heavily armored and incorporated the latest in Starfleet weaponry and defensive technology along with a class-7 warp drive. The Defiant was considerably smaller than most other Federation starships. Despite the ship's compact size, she was packed to the brim with equipment designed for larger starships. By the end of 2373, there were a significant number of Defiant-class ships in operation, which would serve with distinction in conflicts against the Klingon Empire and the Borg, as well as several key battles of the Dominion War.
Please note, due to design limitations, the Defiant class cannot land on a planetary body. It is also unsuited for atmospheric flight, and this should be avoided wherever possible. Landing struts are primarily used while docked internally with a large starbase.
