Betazoid: Physiology

Betazoids typically express physiological gender dimorphically, with primary and secondary male and female biological features similar to the human race. Fully genetic Betazoids possess black irises while mixed-race Betazoids might also express other iris colors which are possible in the genetic expression of the non-Betazoid parent. Betazoid peoples can vary in skin tone and hair color similarly to human populations. The dominant hair colors are brown and black; graying and balding patterns are similar to humans.

Betazoid gestation in utero is typically 10 months in length. As they are reproductively compatible with many other humanoid races, for Betazoid mixed-race pregnancies where gestational rates diverge more significantly between parental species, additional pregnancy complications can arise, either necessitating prevention of early labor or, contrastingly, early delivery.

Sleep studies have shown that Betazoids reach REM state at a different frequency as compared to human sleep cycles.

Menopausal Betazoid women often experience something colloquially referred to as “The Phase” when they are said to experience as much as four times the amount of sexual interest as is considered baseline; although such measurements are mostly subjective, it’s culturally anticipated as a normal part of Betazoid menopause. Some researchers suggest that the decline in Betazoid female hormones cause a drop in inhibitions in general (openness traits that allow for younger females, especially mothers with babies, to negotiate societal safety and group harmony) and affect personality beyond sexual interest. This may account for some part of the society’s inclination towards matriarchal hierarchies, as elder women tend to be more outspoken and dominant personalities in Betazoid social dynamics.

A notable illness among the Betazoid elderly is identified as Zanthi Fever. If afflicted, the Betazoid paracortex is affected in such a way as to lose projection control, causing others to share the emotional experiences of the individual Betazoid affected by the fever.

Betazoid Telepathy

Natural telepathy is a defining feature of the Betazoid species. Betazoids are generally born with a very nascent sense of telepathy, relying on empathic connection with surrounding family members, and forming a very powerful bond with the birth mother who can sense the baby in utero most directly (strong mother-child bonding is another trait of the race that is theorized to contribute to societal preference for matrilineal social hierarchy).

The biological organ most responsible for Betazoid telepathy is known to be the paracortex— a lobe of the Betazoid brain. The neurotransmitter is a hormone known as psilosynine. Changes in levels of psilosynine have a distinct impact on telepathic capacity. Lack of the hormone can restrict telepathy, while an over abundance can cause high sensitivity and overwhelm of the telepathic senses.

For most Betazoids, their nascent telepathic sense is developed gradually— weak throughout the early development years but then sets in most strongly during adolescence, when the paracortex fully forms and the necessary hormone production increases.

Within families, education, and society, Betazoid children and preadolescents are prepared and trained in telepathic control and manners, practicing telepathic screening of their own thought and self-control over emotional projections and generally being trained to respect the privacy of others and manage their own. Often through games, Betazoid children are trained to distinguish their own feelings from the feelings of other persons and creatures, so as not to be overwhelmed or confused. The telepathic sense then is experienced in layers of perception and intuition of differentiation, often referred to as telepathic filtering (similar to tuning in or out of sound by attuning one’s attention).

Occasionally, a baby is born who, from birth, has full telepathic awareness. These individuals are exceptionally gifted, but also very vulnerable as they do not have the training most Betazoids receive in advance of the setting in of full telepathic awareness. The constant input of other minds and the lack of filtering skills can cause great mental stress as well as undue harm. Although such early development of the paracortex and subsequent behavioral and social disorders can be treated, left undirected some of these very gifted individuals can unfortunately become a danger to themselves and others. Betazoids generally have regular telepathic testing with other routine medical screening to try and detect such gifted persons early and steer them correctly, and there are specialized residential homes, correctional facilities, and retreat centers to try and address telepaths who either reject Betazoid telepathic normative behavior, or lack the capacity for self regulation.

On the other end of the spectrum of telepathic capacity, occasionally Betazoid children fail to develop the telepathic center of the paracortex. (They could have a fully functional cortex, but low philosylene hormone production. This condition is medically easier to treat and restore with regular medication). These individuals are no less Betazoid, but for them it can be difficult to relate to and share the full experience of Betazoid social life, and so they are generally understood to be disabled among other Betazoids, having telepathic blindness.

Betazoid telepathic skills can range anywhere between those two extremes, however.

On average, Betazoid females have stronger telepathic capacities, able to sense farther and in more granularity than the average male Betazoid, however, research shows that Betazoid males measure more often in the extremes (extremely gifted or entirely non-telepathic).

For individuals with mixed genetics involving other non-Betazoid races, the capacity for telepathy is usually muted, most commonly considered to be expressed as empathic: limited to emotional perceptions and less so of distinct thoughts. The psionic skills of these mixed race Betazoid offspring can potentially vary widely however, depending on dominant and non-dominant genes and the contributing biology of the other parent’s race. It can even vary broadly from one sibling to the next.

Telepathic conversations can still be maintained between a full telepath and telepath or empath of more limited abilities. In fact, telepaths can engage in mental conversation with any readable species, but such a telepathic ‘channel’ relies on the telepath opening and maintaining it.

The receptivity level of telepathic skill or empathic ability can be hindered by the feelings of the perceiver, particularly when the perceiver is either highly distracted, impaired, or experiencing intense emotions. This makes the reliability of the telepathic sense as flawed as any other observational sense and subject to the perspective, memory, and impressionableness of the telepathic observer.

Some Betazoid telepaths are able to perceive the emotions of animals (most particularly creatures noted for animal intelligence or abstract reasoning capacities) and can develop affections with pets and service animals, forming strong bonds of trust with creatures in their care. Hawk training and horse riding are two animal husbandry skills that have been noted as practiced by Betazoids employing empathic skills in concert with the animal.

Some Betazoids are actually avoidant of animals because they don’t care to connect with animal minds, for fear of assuming an effect from the creature on their own mentality.

Betazoid telepaths and empaths have even shown telepathic and empathic awareness at some level for various non-corporal beings, as well as many creatures who do not possess a biological brain or nervous system in the most obvious anatomical sense. If the creature or being has something like a mind of any kind, there is possibility of the Betazoid telepathy sensing it; it doesn’t seem Betazoids are only limited to detecting mental capacities emitted strictly by nervous systems.

By contrast, other beings occasionally prove impervious to Betazoid mental detections. Races which evade the Betazoid telepathic sense are known to include (but not limited to) Ferengi, Changelings, Dopterians, Kalons, and Ullians. In the case of the Ferengi, it is specifically the anatomy of their four lobed brains that has been identified as the way in which the race is naturally impervious to Betazoid telepathy. When a Betazoid is unable to detect emotions or thoughts of another person, it can cause an emotional numbing toward that individual, who can feel less than “real” compared to those the Betazoid can sense telepathically.

Some individuals— both telepaths and non-telepaths— can train in masking techniques intended to divert, evade, or block telepathic detection. A telepath might not detect someone in a lie; the method of evasion employed might be similar to evading a technological lie detection test, such as through mental relaxation (‘going static’), diverting one’s thoughts from the subject, or perhaps by fully believing the lie one is telling.

Betazoid Society

Honesty is one of the most upheld virtues of general Betazoid culture, as might be expected of a race of telepaths. Honest feedback is so common in Betazoid society that oftentimes cultures who value subtlety can appear to a Betazoid as being rude although the other culture may indeed be attempting to be respectful by showing restraint. Unrestrained openness to one another is practically expected; as such, Betazoidbehaviors can be especially difficult for individuals (Betazoid or otherwise) who place high value on personal privacy. In fact, someone who refrains from sharing can inadvertently draw much attention as it becomes all the more of a curiosity to know what they might be hiding and why. It takes a great deal of discipline in cool indifference to retain one’s privacy as a Betazoid living on Betazed, although there are still those who manage to live more quiet lives than their fellows.

Betazoid culture tends to cycle through trends, sometimes bringing back practices from its past, or scrapping one tradition for a new one. Trends likewise vary from region to region or between Betazoid Ruling Houses as one House seeks to distinguish itself from the rest. Adapting a new or historic style or practice has become a way in which to gain prestige and be set apart, after which a successful style quickly becomes adopted broadly, causing devaluation and the need for fresh trends for differentiation among the nobility. The speed at which this happens can seem disorienting for outsiders. This is most apparent in things like music, styles of dress, forms of entertainment, as well as manners and ceremonies.

In the 24th century some noted cultural behaviors included: ringing a chime at intervals during a formal dinner (to express thankfulness); holding and attending weddings in the nude (to demonstrate trust and honesty); incorporating live birds in tiny cages into one’s wigs or hats (to demonstrate wealth, although the practice was considered cruel and only fake or holographic birds are used now); and patterning architecture in the form of mushrooms. While some practices may stick around for longer (like the mushroom buildings) others fade; given enough time, outdated practices eventually may be re-adapted in service of the rivalry for haute couture recognition.

It was at one time a tradition to have Betazoid children telepathically bonded to one another for future marriage; initially this was practiced between powerful families for merging political interests, land, or resources, but later taken up by a community’s telepathic matchmaker in the middle classes, becoming globally normalized for centuries. This practice produced an innate feeling of love in the bonded pair as they later matured, and such pairs considered one another to be their ‘Imzadi’. Like all other cultural trends, it eventually became looked down upon; many rebelled, actively rejecting their pair bondings and choosing other, unbonded mates, against their parents’ blessing. The word Imzadi then took on the opposite meaning, as one’s true love opposed to that of a love chosen by others. By the time of early space travel, child pair bonding was considered backwards, once again usually only done among the rich for the original purposes, often quietly to avoid controversy.

Although child pair bonding is no longer a ubiquitous practice, the term ‘Imzadi’ remains one of endearment between lovers meaning ‘beloved’.

A Betazoid way to acknowledge the feelings of someone else is to say “RaBeem”, meaning ‘I understand’. This is an expression of respect for someone else’s feelings or perspective, whether agreed with or not.

Betazoid Government

The Government of Betazed is officially a Matrilineal Parliamentary Oligarchy (although sometimes classed as a Matriarchal Bureaucracy), largely formed around Betazoid matriarchal birthrights and lines which adhere to a structure of Houses. Some of the language of these Ruling Houses retain references to religious orders and relics (ie ‘sacred’, ‘holy order’ etc), although the matters of faith or specific religious practices and beliefs have faded or been obscured from modern memory.

One well known hereditary title of nobelesse is that of Lwaxana Troi, "Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, and Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed."

Both men and women serve Betazoid governmental roles, but both do so representing their historical Matriarchal houses.

Many minor houses are often founded, but tend to petition an established Ruling House to annex them and accept them as lesser representatives. It is a complex social order and rare that a minor house is inducted into the leading order of Ruling Houses. To do so, a matriarch of the minor house, either while still living or posthumously, must achieve some sort of legendary status (similar in some respects to a ‘sainthood’) and thereby lay claim to some already established ancient rite, title, element, or artifice, then be proposed induction through by a Matriarch of an established Ruling House, after which the other Ruling Houses must recognize the candidate unanimously. A similar process is employed for a disgraced house to lose its status. Because of this induction and dismissal method, Houses in the Betazoid Parliament are not limited to a fixed number (but there have never been fewer than five).

Via selection boards chosen among the Houses according to each House’s own rules, planetary and system regional representatives are nominated within each House and then from these the global governesses and governors are selected, as well as diplomats and representatives to the Federation and additional Interstellar organizations. Some are nominated to standing positions (for life or for a term, depending on the role), others to limited roles, delegations, diplomatic missions, or negotiations which conclude after a certain session or goal is reached.

Betazoid citizens can petition their government through the channels of their own Ruling House to which they are born a member, or to which they have married, been adopted to, or have transferred or immigrated to (according to the citizenship laws of the individual Houses). It is possible to have claims of citizenship in more than one house.

The global capital of Betazed is Rixx, a city within the greater metropolitan area known as Medara.

Betazoid History

Pre-History

As do the pre-histories of many worlds, the most ancient of Betazoid history predates surviving records, but mythologies imply an ancient event which prompted the latent biological abilities in the species to blossom, supposedly to oppose a non-corporeal monster or powerful inter-dimensional being or beings (tellings vary) which suppressed, tortured, and/ or massacred ancient Betazoids, either by manifesting as visions, by means of strong persuasion over the individual’s faculties, or even physical possession in which the tormenting demons controlled the individual.

In the ancient mythologies, these demonic forces were repelled via development of empathic awareness, which exposed the tormenting demons to truth and prevented their lies from continued entrapment and enslavement of the Betazoid people. This is counted as having been “The Great Spiritual War” and it is uncertain if it actually involved animated demonic forces; or if it was simply fought between different tribal sects of Early Betazoid peoples who uncharitably characterized their enemies as being influenced by demons; or, if indeed, it ever happened at all.

In fact, there are just as many alternate legends that portray the telepathic gift as being bestowed peacefully onto the Betazoid people thanks to a benevolent goddess, in gratitude for the people’s mindful care of nature.

There are many plays and novels and other forms of storytelling born out of the romanticization of this ancient period, most of them composed many thousands of years after the fact, fashioned from remainders of poems found inscribed on broken relics, improvised from motifs on pottery and tapestry, and extracted from songs and dances passed down through oral traditions. Imagination has filled in the sizable gaps.

Modernly, it is hypothesized that entities akin to Redjac may have plagued the prehistoric Betazed race, being especially interested in the heightened emotions that could be fed from among the proto-telepathic and likely already empathic populace, inadvertently causing the Betazoids who survived to develop stronger telepathic capacities in their paracortexes and ultimately repel them from the planet via spiritual practices which would later be encoded into the observances and philosophies of Beazoid Temples and Ruling Houses.

Pre-Warp History

Ruling Houses came to the forefront after regional tribes organized from settlements to cities and have remained the primary state unit of Betazed governance. While there are accounts of some patriarchal Ruling Houses in early history, the majority self-organized under matrilineal orders often led by a priestess or allied with leaders of the individual House’s faith practice. While early systems of worship were diverse, the most common ones characterized a pantheon of “Four Deities" as well as a place of suffering called “The Great Fire”.

Since the development of Telepathy in the Betazoid species, full scale wars have been very rare. Most conflicts between Ruling Houses have been resolved through negotiation.  The pervasive experience of empathy for those in pain has prevented the race from engaging in destructive warfare. It also prevented an interest in developing planetary defenses besides essential policing, trade, and regulatory enforcement (in system patrol cutters, a port authority, and an aerospace guard). While able to repel pirates, help ships in need, maintain system outposts, or stop smuggled goods, Betazed had no serious military or defensive force and no substantial weapons platforms.

Khrystros and the First Legendary Houses

One of the first recorded legendary heroes of Betazoid history is the teacher Khrysaros, a Betazoid man who trained acolytes; his students went on to become the first heroes and heroines of many of the earliest recorded Ruling Houses (which established themselves around these acolyte’s religious cults). These were the Legendary Heroes who purportedly vanquished the demons of old and established many of the associated relics and artifacts particular to this period. Krysaros’ legends bridge the time of prehistory and recorded history and are some of the earliest known accounts on the planet.

Khrysaros’ is supposed to have penned many of his own teachings; the surviving copies of the Khrysaros’ scrolls are studied in theology, history, and philosophy. Further teachings are recorded variously through his acolytes and their subsequent acolytes. Khrysaros is credited as having taught peaceful and wise ways and the proper use and training of telepathy in service to others, heralding thousands of years of peace and stability in the world. Depictions and accounts abound of Khrysaros.

Modern Ruling Houses’ titles are traced back to symbols connected to the teachings of Khrysaros and his acolytes. One of the primary acolytes was Rixx, who certified the first of the ancient Houses with his five signet rings, sealing their legitimacy to rule. The closer one can tie one’s House’s history or lineage to Khrysaros, the more clout one is perceived as having.

Although no longer typically sponsored by cultic priestly orders, new Heroines and Heroes are still canonized into the Halls of Legend via a rigorous method of selection and debate by specially organized committees in halls of Betazed’s Parliament.

The Betazoid Occult

Unofficially, portions of the oldest Khrysaros accounts about the actual Telepathic battles of the Great Spiritual War have been rumored to be preserved under lock and key and supposedly only known by a secret, unnamed, psionic sect. Mainline historians and theologians do not accept recreations of these texts as legitimate; there are often conspiracies which claim to ‘leak’ portions of the Forbidden Knowledge of Khrysaros, but these are all proven forgeries or inventions of the imagination.

According to the rumors, these hidden texts are considered dangerous knowledge, and kept secret because of the violence they might cause the Betazoid psyche. Some say it has all been destroyed, if it ever existed at all. But the mere idea hints at a more violent side of Khrysaros’ teachings that most would prefer to presume as false, as it might undermine the legitimacy of the current Ruling Houses and run contradictory to the non-violent values supposedly imbued by the lineage from the Legendary Mothers and Fathers.

Psionic copycat cults, and societies of underground scholars seeking the lost esoteric knowledge have formed around the idea of such lost writings; although they don't typically amount to anything aside from people looking to scratch the itch of morbid curiosity, they can attract aberrant telepaths and members are sometimes implicated in plots or illegal activities.

In the 20th century, one cult that sought Khrysaros’ hidden knowledge managed, via a dark kind of intensive scholarship, to assemble diverse references to ancient teachings and from these reverse-engineer a method of using telepathy to kill. This method leveraged the potential for the most gifted telepaths to unlock psionic abilities of telekinesis, making them powerful, deadly, and practically unstoppable. The cult was found out by the Betazoid authorities, routed out and destroyed.

For four hundred years (well into the late 24th century) all knowledge of this event was sealed and available only to Betazoid authorities with the highest security clearances, until it was rediscovered by a psychopathic researcher with access to the security files, Trent Havren, who used the knowledge to commit murder. The method of his killings were not made public and the files he uncovered were resealed and remain restricted.

Betazoid Enlightenment

In the years preceding warp travel, the regionally based Ruling Houses were stirred by a key figure who heralded a modern, space-faring age: a priest from Betazed’s Third House by the name of Dainara, who, in spite of his own vestments, championed the idea of secularizing government and industry apart from the direct influence of cultic orders and clerical leaders who held vestiges of power over the Houses and were a limiting burden on development and exploration. In his own day he was not credited much (his teachings were very popular among the people, but not among the ruling class) but his ideas caught on much later, during his old age, taking root among other houses and leading to government reforms.

With the last ties broken between government and theocracy, new industries flourished in the secularized social orders. Betazed formed a global Parliamentary government and established the planet’s capital in what is now known as Rixx (situated within the greater area also known as Medara). Although undergoing reforms through the millenia, the structure of Ruling Houses and a global Parliament has remained relatively stable. These first secular reforms set the table for later reforms which would allow for Betazed to join the Federation and led to Dainara’s modern canonization as a Hero of Betazed, a century after his own passing. But Dainara lived long enough to witness the first warp flight and to represent Betazed during first contact with the Terabians in his twilight years.

Although spirituality and faith remain personal practices among some Betazoids and the symbolism and resultant philosophies are an important aspect of history which continues to influence the language and culture of the Houses, the past era of direct and indirect religious cult leadership was ended in the time of Dainara. Historically, Betazed counts this early spaceflight era to be a kind of global Enlightenment period.

Upon achieving sub-light spaceflight, Betazed established settlements on its habitable natural satellites (the planet boasts three moons) and research bases throughout its home system.

Post-Warp History

Betazed first became warp capable in 2139, with the test flight of the Avandar.

The race the Betazoids first made contact with are known as the Terabians and hail from the planet of Terab IV. Historically, the discovery is not counted positively. Although the two races met amicably enough and began to enact diplomacy, cultural exchange, and trade, the Terabians harbored great distrust of the telepaths and often blamed and imprisoned Betazoids unfairly. Although quite aged at the time, Betazed called on her greatest leader of the time, Dainara to broker peace.

During the negotiations with the Terabins, Dainara developed what the Betazoids have enshrined as The Code of Sentience from which the Betazoid people afterward took their ethical instruction in living among non telepathic races.

There are many confirmed reports both from Betazoids and Caitians that some Caitians once hunted some Betazoids. Combined with the poor relationship with the Terabians and deadly encounters with Caitians, it is possible for these reasons the Betazoid race in its nascent warp period may have shunned any attempts to establish vulnerable colonies abroad, choosing to remain in their own home system. The trouble with Caitians seemed to last relatively briefly, however, as by the time the Betazoids entered the Federation as a member world, there was no continued bad blood recorded between Betazoids and Caitians.

UFP Membership

When the United Federation of Planets was founded in 2161, The Betazoids had no knowledge yet of Humans or Vulcans. Betazed encountered the Federation and began the process to become a Federation member world in the mid 23rd century; Betazed Membership was fully realized in 2294 with induction as a member world with representation on the Federation Council. In the early half of the 23rd Century, Betazoid telepathic capacities were not yet widely known. The first Betazoid Starfleet member was a Betazoid woman named Enamori Jenn. Betazoids were represented within the Federation delegations at the Second Khitomer Accords, as well as the Treaty of Algeron in 2311.

By the turn of the 24th century, Betazed’s census counted 5.6 Billion Betazoids, plus a population of over 17 million Humans (emigrated primarily from Sol and Alpha Centauri). It can be safely assumed other member races of the UFP were represented in like or fewer numbers as humans. By the 24th Century interspecies marriage with peoples from other Federation worlds was largely accepted, although every Ruling House handles the legalities and rights to the House titles according to its own laws— some require a certain level of Betazoid parentage to qualify for representational titles, other Houses preference place of birth in the home system over genetics, leading to lower courts having some non-Betazoid races representing local Betazoid politics by the late 24th century. It is anticipated that the Ruling Houses will have to contend with accepting a minority of mixed heritage and biologically non-Betazoid  parliamentary members by the 25th Century.

Dominion Occupation

The relatively peaceful state of the Betazoid homeworld was severely disrupted on September 7th, 2374— the day when Betazed fell to Dominion invasion forces. Due to several millennia of peace and philosophies that eschewed violence, Betazed did not have a strong enough planetary defense to repel the invasion. The Dominion occupied Betazed for over four months.

Tens of thousands of Betazoids went unaccounted for as the most telepathically gifted were taken by Jem’Hadar soldiers and delivered to Cardassian scientists for experimentation. These were easily rounded up based on Betazed’s medical screening records associated with every citizen. It is suspected that among their chief reasons, Dominion leadership specifically targeted the planet for invasion in search of these test subjects.

The lead scientist directing the horrific research was Cardassian exobiologist Crell Moset. Through the suffering and death of many Betazoid subjects, he attempted to graft Betazoid telepathy onto Jem’Hadar test subjects, but the Jem’Hadar biology proved incapable of controlling the psionic skill, causing fatal seizures in the soldiers.

These experiments were carried out aboard Sentok Nor: a Cardassian orbital base built with Betazoid slave labor and used to breed Jem’Hadar soldiers; the station was destroyed in 2375. (the station’s name implies that the Cardassian name for the Betazed star system is Sentok).

Although it fell to the Dominion quickly, the Betazoid populace mounted their own resistance and many hid from Jem’Hadar occupation forces. There were many casualties in the resistance during the occupation. Living conditions while hiding in the forests and caves of Betazed’s wild preservations were difficult and exposure, sickness, and hunger set in quickly.

Eventually, thanks to insight leaked to the resistance about the failure of the Jem’Hadar to adapt to telepathic skills in Moset’s experimentation, the telepathic Betazoids learned to disorient the Jem’Hadar with projected emotions, making the Jem’Hadar soldiers more vulnerable to physical attack and restraint. The Jem’Hadar, unaccustomed to feelings of any kind, turned catatonic and a minority went berserk on their fellows.

The level of offensive psionic force necessary to repel the Jem’Hadar exhausted the telepath such that four of every ten who defended the planet in this manner died in the effort. But the success on the ground crippled the Jem’Hadar forces, causing the Dominion’s withdrawal from the system.

Although Betazed was saved, the death toll (about 15% of the overall population) and suffering experienced by the surviving populace left an indelible mark on the collective Beatazoid psyche; the Dominion occupation of Betazed is expected to deeply affect future generations and lead to adaptation of different cultural values and to reactionary departures from traditional philosophical branches of thought.

The fall of Betazed represented a point in the Dominion War that galvanized the Federation forces against the enemy encroachment on primary member territories. It was an expensiveand short-lived win for the Dominion, who paid a high cost in attempting to hold the system while telepaths chipped at and undermined every effort; it also backfired on the Dominion as the morale of the war wearied Federation was rekindled by word of the unconscionable fate of Betazoid. In spite of painful losses and demoralizing prolonged fighting, after the fall of Betazed, Federation commanding officers’ tactics changed in more ferocious and creative ways and efforts redoubled against the Dominion.
